Let’s Talk Memes

Posted on February 16, 2021February 15, 2021 By Lucille Yates No Comments on Let’s Talk Memes
Personal

No matter how you say the word, we all see memes every day on social media. Of course, if you don’t use social media, you might be questioning what I’m talking about. Per Merriam-Webster, a meme is “an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online, especially through social media.”

Now we are all readers, or I hope everyone reading this is a reader, and I think we should go down the reader meme rabbit hole today. I’m going to share my 10 favorite reader memes and I want you to send me your favorites.

Please note that I save these from various sources and have no idea who initially created some of these. All I know is I did not create them.

# 10 Tsundoku

Ttsundoku: a cross between being a bookworm and a hoarder, when someone buys an unreadable amount of books.

Tsundoku is a Japanese word that is perfect for the book hoarder/reader. I’m 99% sure I say the word wrong, but that doesn’t stop me from loving this meme.

# 9 Interrupted

Woman stares blankly forward, annoyed. Caption: When someone assumes that when you are reading a book, that you are “doing nothing” and therefore can be interrupted. Repeatedly.

Have you ever been interrupted while reading a book? If yes, you will appreciate this next meme and most likely had the same expression.

# 8 Tidy

From Quote Addicts: But it is impossible, I find, to tidy books without ending by sitting on the floor in the middle of a great untidiness and reading.—Elizabeth von Arnim

I have a hard time organizing my books. And most of the time it ends in my surrounded by a pile of book in the floor, trying to figure out the order in which I’m going to read my books. Who needs shelves? Right?

Find out more about Elizabeth von Arnim here.

# 7 Do I Own This Book?

Green Snake head with scrunched face. Caption: At the bookstore: Trying to remember if I have this book at home on the shelf.

It’s not a problem owning books. It’s even not much of a problem buying more books. But sometimes we don’t quite remember which books we own, either in print or in ebook format.

# 6 More Books?

Pie Chart with two sections, one blue/green and the other yellow. Caption: Do I need more book? Yes, in blue. Also, yes, but in yellow.

This brings us to my next favorite meme. Do I need more books? Absolutely. And here’s the pie chart to prove it. I also need more pie.

# 5 Money

Comic by Sarah Andersen: How I Spend My Money—Block one: Groceries “Just the basics.” Block two: Clothes, “An occasional splurge, but mostly necessities.” Block three: Household Item, “Whichever brands are cheapest.” Block four: Books. Lady stands at counter in furs and jewelry. Block five: Lady throws all the money in the air.

I don’t know many people who don’t try to live a more frugal lifestyle. We cut corners, buy store brand, and delay upgrading our raggedy wardrobe. And then we walk into the bookstore. I’ll take all the books, please.

Find more Sarah Andersen comics here.

# 4 How can you pick just one?

From @cereus-catalina- Them: What’s your favorite book? Me: What, of the ones I’m currently reading? Them: No, like, of all time. Me: Top ten? Them: No, just one! Me: What genre? Them: Just answer the question! Me: I would, but you really need to narrow it down.

I don’t have a favorite book. There are so many to choose from, so many I’ve read, and so many more I want to read. I’m not picking a favorite. So stop asking.

# 3 Things Book Lovers Do

Comic—Things Book Lovers Do by Adrienne Hedger at HedgerHumor.com Block one: Read several books at one time… (woman holds two books at once) Block two: While also having a stack of book to read next… (stack of books) Block three: And keeping a running list of even MORE books you want. (woman writes list on paper) Block four: Feel happy when you remember you get to read your book later. (Man smiles) Block five: Feel sad and lost when you finish a great book. (woman stands hunched over sad) Block six: Pause to appreciate a beautifully written sentence. (man sits back from reading in awe) Block seven: See the cover of an old book and be transported back to your youth. (woman holds book with huge smile) Block eight: Find joy and comfort in rereading a favorite book. (Man holds book with hand over heart) Block nine: Walk into a library or bookstore and say, “I could live here!” (woman walks amongst bookshelves)

If you love books and love reading, I guarantee you do most of the following. Feeling sad and lost after finishing a great book gets me the most. I can run off that feeling for days and I delay in picking up the next great book.

Find more Adrienne Hedger comics here.

 # 2 Upset Bookworms

Things Bookworms are Upset About: • Sequels coming out a different size to first book • Damaged book mail • How they can’t read through their TBR pile before they die • That time the Library of Alexandria got burned down

There are things that upset bookworms, that other people never notice. We still comfort each other regularly when the subject comes back around. Especially when we think about the Library of Alexandria. Just don’t bring it up.

# 1 Fat Books

“Isn’t it odd how much fatter a book gets when you’ve read it several times? As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smells, and then, when you look at the book again many years later, you find yourself there, too, a slightly younger self, slightly different, as if the book had preserved you like a pressed flower, both strange and familiar.”—Cornelia Funke
Quote by Cornelia Funke

This next quote is by Cornelia Funke. I snagged this meme, but it didn’t have the name of the person it belonged to, so I did a quick search. Cornelia Funke. And it is a beautiful quote and feeling about reading and re-reading your favorite books. It is such a lovely thought and should be shared often. Especially right before and right after you read one of your many favorite books.

Find out more about Cornelia Funke here.
